But one topic still remains: what are the main questions before launching a marketplace? How do I sell my services?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to our numerous projects and the expertise we acquired at Cocolabs, we are able to give you five ways to answer this question given the nature of your service:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it is <strong>commoditized<\/strong>, which means you can describe it and have the price fixed in advance. In that case, you will determine the price with three potential ways :\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Per unit<\/strong>, like for the number of nights in a hotel like on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocolabs.com\/en\/blog\/why-are-rental-marketplaces-so-successful\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rental marketplaces<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocolabs.com\/en\/marketplace-examples\/c2c-marketplace\/misterbandb-lgbtq-travel-marketplace\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misterbnb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a platform like airbnb that helps the LGBTQ community finding accommodations.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Per seat<\/strong>, for example when your book one at the cinema\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Service based<\/strong>, which means the price is fixed in advance <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like on the platform <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocolabs.com\/en\/marketplace-examples\/b2c-marketplace\/co-racer-the-platform-that-lets-you-experience-thrills-on-race-tracks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-racer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a rental marketplace that lets you book an experience on European race tracks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it is <strong>uncommoditized<\/strong>, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meaning that the booking requires a long and deep conversation between the two askers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you can have two ways of fixing its price:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The quote way, which means the price will be discussed between the asker and the offeror. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocolabs.com\/en\/marketplace-examples\/b2b-marketplace\/spacefy-rent-commercial-spaces\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spacefy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a renting space platform, is using this model.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or the request for proposal, which is a one to many discussion started by the offeror. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocolabs.com\/en\/marketplace-examples\/b2b-marketplace\/connecting-freelance-sap-consultants-marketplace\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connecting Freelance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which connects companies and SAP freelancers, is a good example for this kind of platform.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Who will initiate the conversation?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have two options for this question:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>offeror<\/strong> is exposing its services, and therefore will initiate the conversation <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before the booking and payment process<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>asker<\/strong> expresses its needs and the offeror answers it if he is available<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obviously, the choice remains to the operator of the platform, considering what he considers to be the best for customer experience. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, the most important part of the business is that buyers and sellers are able to meet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. How do I manage my users?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having users doesn\u2019t only summarize to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocolabs.com\/en\/blog\/platform-users-how-do-they-impact-the-approach-to-the-chicken-and-egg-problem\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chicken and egg problem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you also need to manage them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When choosing how you will manage your users on your platforms, two marketplace models are available:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A closed platform<\/strong>, where the operator will have to verify some or each user to validate them in order to enter the marketplace. This model often takes place on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocolabs.com\/en\/b2b-marketplace\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B2B marketplaces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocolabs.com\/en\/revolutionize-your-e-procurement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e-procurement platforms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>An open platform<\/strong>, where anyone can be a user without any certification. This model is more common in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocolabs.com\/en\/b2c-marketplace\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">B2C marketplaces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocolabs.com\/en\/c2c-marketplace\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C2C marketplaces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The choice of model really depends on the value you want to deliver on your marketplace <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">platform<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and on the revenue model<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why you can also have a <\/span><b>Switch Platform<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Which means a platform where each asker can also be an offeror. This model can only take place on a platform where both users have the same user level: namely B2B or C2C.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. What is my business model?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 business models exist within the marketplace sector:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Commission based<\/strong>, where the operator will take a commission on every booking or sales. As an example, we can think of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.com\/\">Airbnb<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocolabs.com\/en\/marketplace-examples\/b2c-marketplace\/find-builders-pros-home-project\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">360Travaux<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a service marketplace to find builders for your home renovations<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Subscription<\/strong>, where the users will pay to access the platform and really use it, with a try out period or not. It is the case for Malt or Fiverr, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocolabs.com\/en\/blog\/freelance-platforms-the-gateway-for-freelancers\/\">freelance marketplaces<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Lead based model<\/strong>, meaning that if there are no transactions, the operator will earn money on every lead caught as a compensation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Freemium or Ad based model<\/strong>, which is free but will need payments to unlock certain features.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Listing fees model<\/strong>, for when every time there is a new ad, you have to pay for it to be officially published.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Non-transactional model<\/strong>, where it is only a matter of displaying services. It often happens for governmental websites or NGO<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cocolabs.com\/en\/marketplace-examples\/b2c-marketplace\/washington-dc-department-of-consumer-and-regulatory-affairs\/\">DCRA<\/a>, a marketplace that brings on-demand services to the public sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, there is still one last question that you must know about before starting a marketplace :<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. What essential features do I truly need?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to our experience we have seen a lot of clients wanting a large scope of features: they only faced more problems, they wasted time and money building non-essentiel things on their platform.
